If you’re over a certain age (25? 30? 40?) you probably have a story of a dear friend/sister/cousin/daughter who had a terrifying time in childbirth. For me it was my dear friend Katie, who was 8 months pregnant when flu-like symptoms sent her to the doctor, who gave her a short of Vitamin B-12 and told her to go home and rest.

We're getting whiplash. Every time we turn around there seems to be a new affront to women. Whether making pregnancy a "pre-existing condition", defunding Planned Parenthood, or fashioning health policy with no women in the room.

Is the greatness of a medical team determined by training? Skills? Trust? The running of the Boston Marathon reminds me of that awful day four years ago when the Brigham & Women's emergency team went into action, relying on all of the above to save victims of the bombing. I was there when their beepers went off.

Becker's Hospital Review named the following female leaders to its annual list of 130 women hospital and health system "leaders to know". What names belong on the list in 2017? Whose name was left off in 2016? And...how do we attain such a critical mass of nominations Becker's will have to double the list???
