Modern Healthcare recently released its annual list of the 50 Most Influential Physician Executives and Leaders in the U.S. The exclusive list, compiled through a rigorous selection process, recognizes physicians in all healthcare sectors who are guiding their organizations through rapidly changing conditions while demonstrating leadership, innovation, and a commitment to community service. The 2018 list features four members of Women of Impact - a partner of WHAMglobal.

Mothers are dying at higher rates in the United States than any other developed nation. As healthcare systems scramble to address the growing spotlight on maternal mortality and morbidity, accurate data is a critical first step. Last month, Pennsylvania took this significant first step forward in fighting the unsettling growing maternal mortality rate through the establishment of a statewide Maternal Mortality Review Committee (MMRC). WHAMglobal strives to apply global understanding and best practice. Women in the United States have immense influence within the healthcare system. The majority of healthcare spending is controlled by women, and they also make up over half of the workforce in healthcare. Despite this influence, women still lag behind in representation within healthcare leadership, especially in technology startups. However, despite all of the barriers, things seem to be looking up for women in healthcare technology and increased recognition within the Venture Capital world.

The reports are in: the pay gap in the United States is still alive and well. A report released by Pew Research Center last month found that although the pay gap has narrowed slightly since 1980, “…it has remained relatively stable over the past 15 years or so. In 2017, women earned 82% of what men earned.”

On May 6, thousands of people packed neighborhoods for the 2018 Pittsburgh Marathon. May 6 also happened to be the date of March for Moms, a national campaign that rallied people from across the U.S. to demand higher-quality maternity care. To capitalize on the already-packed streets, the Women’s Health Activist Movement Global (WHAMglobal), JHF’s newest supporting organization, arranged for Pittsburgh to become a sister city for March for Moms.
